The indigenes of Ogboso and Eziora communities of Umulokpa clan in Uzo-uwani local government area of Enugu State are calling on the government to quickly come to their aid as flood disaster has brought untold hardship and sufferings to their land.
When Centre for Innovative and Pragmatic Development Initiative (CIPDI) team visited, it was seen that flood has wreaked havoc on the areas submerging the agrarian communities especially people in the valley, forcing some to flee their homes while others who have nowhere to go stayed with the attendant life-threatening conditions.
In an interview the traditional ruler of Umulokpa Community, HRH Igwe J. Ifediegwu said they are trying all they could to help the locals, government and good spirited individuals should do more to help the suffering masses. A farmer Mrs. Nneze said life has lost its meaning as flood has destroyed their farmlands which is their only source of livelihood. Also, two members of the community-based emergency response team formed by umulokpa people’s assembly UPA Mr. Johnson Obodouzu who is the secretary and chief Henry Okafor member, said they are eagerly waiting for response from NEMA & SEMA as they have reported the disaster to them.
They also appeal to the government to reconstruct the 7km link Road to Anambra which has been in a deplorable condition for many years. On Sunday morning the 16th of October 2022 while trying to transport a villager Mr. Anyanwumelu Johnson Okoye to Anambra by canoe for urgent medical treatment, the canoe capsized and before the man was rescued, he gave up the ghost. They, therefore, called on the government, relevant agencies, good, spirited individuals, and the church to come to their rescue for these are really trying times for their communities.
CIPDI as an organization is soliciting for support from individuals and corporate bodies to assist the victims.
